How to write a essay proposal In a nutshell, a proposal essay is precisely what it seems: a paper that proposes an idea for a major project, whether its nature is academic, economic or business related. And, the idea must be supported by significant evidence in order to persuade an audience of the validity of your proposal. Whatâs your idea? And, why do you think itâs good? Basically, these are the main questions you must answer in your work. In your work you must thoroughly describe what it is that you suggest, the necessary steps to get there, what will be the final outcome. Key elements of a good proposal paper This is the best structure of proposal paper: Introduction: here you have to inform your audience of the history behind your proposal. Maybe itâs the most critical piece of your paper since you must try to grab the mind of your reader right away. The only way to do so is to know your audience. Find their interests, their problems and the issues they care the most about. This way it will be easy to find an anecdote or some statistics about the topic that wonât leave your audience indifferent. Proposal: this part should be very concise since you just have to lay out your proposal. Donât worry if it ends up being stated in a couple sentences, thatâs normal. Plan of action: now you must persuade your audience explaining to them how your proposal is going to be implemented. And to do that you need to go deep. Talk about all the specifics and touch all the details to show that youâve really put some thought into it. Youâre serious about this issue, donât you? And, in order to increase your knowledge or expertise on the matter, consider in your paper what obstacles youâll be likely to face and what complications will hardly occur but are still possible. This way youâll definitely have a strong handle on the issue. Desired outcomes: here youâre going to define your goals. Youâre going to risk being a little bit repetitive here, but itâs not an issue. Whatever resource you donât have at the moment but need to achieve your wanted outcomes write about them here. Be clear and concise, just explain what do you need and why it is so. Conclusion: here you donât have to just rehash whatâs in the intro, but you still can include some anecdotes you didnât talk about in the previous section. Just make sure to keep it short. This section should just recall again the main purpose of your proposal, along with the major arguments in your favor. Works cited: now that the paper is finished you can put all the necessary citations at the end. Donât forget, you have to mention every source you cite word for word here. Choose your topic. If this is an academic assignment, you may already have a clear topic that was given to you. In this case, just talk with your professor to make sure you understand everything properly. If itâs a business proposal, you should already know what you want from your reader (aka possible business partner). Do your research. Want to assure the counterpart that nobody except you can handle the situation? You must make a thorough research. What will you cover? Is it evident to a stranger who reads your paper? Whatâs the situation right now? What facts took it to this point? Can you be totally sure that these are the real reasons? What about others? Do you know any other person that already gave it a shot to come up with a solution? Did it work out or not? For what reason? Think about all of these questions and spend some time writing a proposal paper ideas. Donât worry if it feels totally random, youâll organize the information later. Now state clearly what the main issue is and try to define it as thoroughly as you can. But please, for the sake of God donât just write a boring summary. Rather craft some punchy sentences to show that you went deep on the issue, did a proper research and evaluated all the critical variables. Clarify your solution. Whatâs your solution to the problem? Try to be as direct as you can here. Remember that youâre talking to skeptic folks who have to be persuaded that what you offer is possible. So, is your quick fix logical? Does it require a clearly defined amount of time to be implemented? Think about it and try to be reasonable. A smart way to do so is to get a clear idea of whatâs your main goal and what are the secondary ones. The first is what you have to obtain no matter what. While secondary goals can be sacrificed. Human Rights and Social Justice Integrated Paper Vicki MacWhinnie-Ilundain Fordham University Viewpoint and Concepts that Best Clarify the Dilemmas in Hugoââ¬â¢s Case Hugoââ¬â¢s story highlights the value conflicts that social workers face in every-day practice. The policies that dictate the funding, the scope of services, and the eligibility for the services that Hugo may need in order to actualize his basic human rights were developed within a system that continues to practice within the Rawlsian theory of social justice frame work. Therefore, these government policies tend to support the concept that people are only entitled to their ââ¬Å"fair and due shareâ⬠of services and/or access to resources if they are working to enhance the good of the over all society (Banerjee, 2005, p. We will write a custom essay sample on Human Rights and Social Justice or any similar topic only for you Order Now 13). In Hugoââ¬â¢s case, there are psychological, cultural and physical factors that may impact his ability to maintain gainful employment. These individual aspects of Hugoââ¬â¢s life situation are not taken into consideration in determining how long he can receive supports, or what types of supports he receives. The state-funded financial benefits that Hugo requires in order to have his very, basic needs met; such as food, clothing and shelter, have a five-year limit. Because there is no consideration to human rights behind the 5-year limit, Hugo has unmet human rights. This creates a value conflict for Hugoââ¬â¢s social worker, who is working within a system that has Rawlsian infused policies; yet, is mandated by the National Social Work Code of Ethics to promote social justice in a manner that respects the unique strengths and dignity of the individual (NASW, 2008). You can read alsoà Justice System Position Paper The social worker working from a human rights-based perspective; where according to Ife (2008) ââ¬Å"there is a obligation on every member of society to respect and support peopleââ¬â¢s rightsâ⬠, will address Hugoââ¬â¢s unmet needs that stem from this 5-year limit policy as unfulfilled rights rather than assessing them as needs for which Hugo may or may not qualify to receive services (p. 113). Adding to the complexity and value conflict of the social workerââ¬â¢s role is the need for the social worker to partner with Hugo to identify not only his assets; but to also identify the barriers he faces. The social worker can develop a more in-depth understanding of Hugoââ¬â¢s barriers by exploring the levels of oppression Hugo experiences and his positionalty vis-a-vis all the systems and individuals he interacts with in society. Hugo is experiencing oppression at a structural level as a result of his position as an immigrant from Haiti who has experience trauma. Hugo has psychological and physical impairments as the result of past trauma, he is of an ethic background that is not part of the privileged class in the United States, and he was born outside the United States. These characteristics, which Hugo inherited through birth and via traumatic life experiences, tend to lead to discrimination in the United States. As a result of systematic discrimination, Hugo belongs to a subordinate group in the society and is oppressed by the dominant group. Mullaly (2010) explains that this ââ¬Å"web of oppression â⬠¦occurs for the most part because of the sanctioned ways that social institutions, laws, social policies, and social practices all work together to benefit the dominant group at the expense of subordinate groupsâ⬠(p. 197). Challenges in Social Work Practice as a Result of a Paradigm Shift In this process of identifying assets and barriers, the social worker may face further value conflicts that impact their ability to empower Hugo to claim his human rights: The social worker has a moral and professional obligation to help Hugo advocate for his human rights. This will include supporting Hugoââ¬â¢s desire to participate in a lawsuit against the US government, who created the 5-year limit on public financial support. In Hugoââ¬â¢s circumstance, the legal mandate that limits the total amount of years he can access funding is impeding Hugoââ¬â¢s right to food, shelter, substance abuse treatment, psychological care, and safety. As an employee of a state funded program, the social worker is not allowed to ignore this mandate or seek to undermine it in any way. The social worker is faced with the challenge of partnering with Hugo to support his quest to actualize his human rights while working within a legal mandate that restricts Hugoââ¬â¢s access to the resources he requires in order to claim his human rights. The social worker is also challenged to reframe the way they conceptualize their interventions with Hugo. By choosing a rights-based approach, the ocial workerââ¬â¢s dialogue regarding Hugoââ¬â¢s rights will not only have a more global tone, but it will require the social worker to use additional skills to engage Hugo in a discussion that empowers Hugo to define his rights. Ife (2008) asserts that this type of social work practice has the potential to do more than just address an individualââ¬â¢s minimum needs but allows for social work to be transformative by building a society ââ¬Å"hel d together by mutual respect for human rights of all citizens and based on notions of interdependence, mutual support and collective well-beingâ⬠(p. 13). The challenge for the social worker is to elevate discussions and practice beyond working just with the individual case by engaging in dialogues and actions that ââ¬Å"link their profession to economic, political and social aims of society as a wholeâ⬠(Riechert, 2007, p. 31). The social worker faces many challenges when making a paradigm shift from a needs-based approach of social work to an elevated practice that focuses on human rights. The needs-based approach, where the provider identifies or diagnoses the ââ¬Å"clientââ¬â¢sâ⬠needs into narrow categories, and then provides a focused ââ¬Å"interventionâ⬠, is deeply ingrained in the traditional models of practice. For example, the medical model is still widely accepted as best practice and is often used in social service programs and agencies. When taking the human rights approach, the social worker will reframe Hugoââ¬â¢s experience so that his rights are identified first, then used to re-conceptualize the needs that have to be met in order to actualize his rights. The social worker also faces the challenge of advocating for Hugo to receive services that support his right-based needs in systems with competing values. The rights-based approach conflicts with agency practices at a mezzo level, such as the use a medical treatment model that may not be culturally sensitive or focused on Hugoââ¬â¢s rights. The social worker may also experience conflicts of values on a macro level when advocating for funding for Hugoââ¬â¢s services. The state and/or federal government, who provide funding for the social services, may place a value on providing the least amount of services for minimum cost to tax payers rather than on Hugoââ¬â¢s unmet rights. On a micro level, the social worker may experience difficulties building rapport with Hugo because of their differences in gender, ethic background, power, education, and socio-economic status. Levelââ¬â¢s and Dimensions of Hugoââ¬â¢s Well Being The Universal Declaration of Human Rights established global principles of human rights that set the precedence that all people have the right to an ââ¬Å"a standard of living adequate for their health and well being; including food, clothing, housing, and medical care and necessary social services, and the right to security in the event of unemployment, sickness, disabilityâ⬠¦ or other lack of livelihood in circumstances beyond his controlâ⬠(United Nations, 1994). Hugoââ¬â¢s social worker can discuss Hugoââ¬â¢s well being in a human rights framework by exploring the domains of wellbeing that impact Hugoââ¬â¢s daily life. The social worker and Hugo may need to establish a language to use as they talk about Hugoââ¬â¢s life experiences, if they are going to successfully switch from a needs-based paradigm to a rights-based paradigm. The social worker can use the seven domains of wellbeing to help deconstruct the needs-based thinking and language that has been the context for the ââ¬Å"interventionsâ⬠Hugo has received from social services in the past. Discussions using the domains of wellbeing may include: education, mental health, physical health, political and legal, cultural, and spiritual. After reaching the 5-year limit for public financial benefits, Hugo does not have access the resources required to provide food, shelter and clothing. Hugoââ¬â¢s metal and physical functioning has been impacted after experiencing a series of traumas, limiting Hugoââ¬â¢s access to education and employment. Hugo experiences multiple levels of oppression and discrimination which he may have internalized making it difficult for him ââ¬Å"to recognize his abilities, cope with normal stresses of life, work productively and make a contribution to his communityâ⬠(World Health Organization, 1999). Hugo has experienced physical traumas that have impacted his physical capabilities. As an immigrant in the United States Hugo does not have fair or equal access to legal support or protection by laws. The discrimination that Hugo experiences also impacts Hugoââ¬â¢s ability to be seen as a valued member of the society his is living in. The social worker can support Hugo by exploring all aspects of Hugoââ¬â¢s well being so he can discover how to start to advocate for his rights that are encompassed by each of these life domains Plan of Engagement, Empowerment and Participation After further exploring various aspects of Hugoââ¬â¢s well being, that would also include Hugoââ¬â¢s assets or strengths, the social worker and Hugo may want to develop a plan of action to guide their work together. Hugo identified immediately that he wanted to access to the group who is collecting data for a lawsuit against the US government. Although it may be considered a conflict of interest for the agency that employs the social worker to be involved with the lawsuit against the state, the social worker can connect Hugo to the group so that he can work directly with them. The social worker could also met with her supervisor and/or agency director to discuss what networks or committees the agency attends in the community. Often these groups hold more power than a single social worker or agency and work directly with governmental agencies to make recommendations or to advocate for policy changes that best serve the interest in their communities. By using these approaches, the social worker is assessing her own positionality in her agency and community so that she can best support the requests of Hugo, without disrupting the relationship she has with her employer. The social worker can also start researching what resources are available in the community that can address the barriers that Hugo is experiencing while trying to claim all of his human rights. Once a comprehensive list of services and or resources is developed, the social worker and discuss each of these resources with Hugo to get his feedback about what he thinks might be useful to him. The social worker would provide information about the advantages and risks and/or disadvantages to using any of the resources so that Hugo could make an informed decision. If there is a resource that Hugo is interested in utilizing but does not quite meet the criteria or does not have the funds to access, the social worker can work with the agency and funding sources to see if there are alternative ways for him to access the resource. Even if Hugo does not get immediate access to the resource, the social worker has left a path of documentation and advocacy that can be used to work towards access to these types of resources in the future. Over time, the social worker can build a strong relationship built from trust and mutual respect with Hugo. In order to do that the social worker will need to understand how her positionality relates to Hugoââ¬â¢s and how that impacts Hugo interactions with the social worker and visa versa. It appears as though Hugo has used multiple community services in the past, yet he still has not actualized his rights. The social-worker can explore with Hugo what services were helpful to him in the past and what aspects of the services became barriers to him changing his over-all well being. If the social worker finds with the services in their community are; for example, not compatible with Hugoââ¬â¢s cultural beliefs, then the social worker can work in the community to advocate for changes how services are provided. Other agencies may be open to expanding how they provide services to include all members in their community. The social worker can accomplish these strategies by adopting the capability approach. Nussbaum (2007) describes the capability approach as ââ¬Å"a species of a human rights approach. It makes clear, how- ever, that the pertinent goal is to make people able to function in a variety of areas of central importance. â⬠(p. 21) By empowering Hugo to further develop his cognitive, physical and social skills, the social worker can provide opportunities for Hugo to attain his identified rights-based needs. The social worker encourages capability building by advocating that Hugo receive services that will build specific skills, not just treat a diagnosis. Over time, Hugo can learn to identify and articulate his rights, reframe them into needs and demand services that allow him to claim his rights. In doing so, Hugo will request services that have the components that he recognizes as necessary for his well-being. References Banerjee, M. M. (2005). Societys Effect on Obesity free essay sample
What is ââ¬Å"fatâ⬠in todayââ¬â¢s society? Who and how can they call someone ââ¬Å"fatâ⬠? How did we get so ââ¬Å"fatâ⬠? On what terms can ââ¬Å"fatâ⬠be interpreted to overweight and or obese? Is the government lying? According to who you can is the type of response youââ¬â¢ll get. Everyone has their personal opinions about being fat but who is right and who is wrong? Or even is there a right or wrong? How can someone be called fat? Can fat be a good thing rather than a bad, as the media and governments tells us. With David Zinczenkoââ¬â¢s controversial article on suing fast foods is wrong to Paul Camposââ¬â¢s argumentative essay criticizing the BMI scale weââ¬â¢ll get professional responses on this controversial topic. Sometimes ââ¬Å"fatâ⬠can be blamed on fast food. According to ââ¬Å"Donââ¬â¢t Blame the Eaterâ⬠, by David Zinczenko, he argues that suing a fast food place is wrong and should be your responsibility on what he eats. He gave the perfect example to show us how wrong it is with ââ¬Å"isnââ¬â¢t that like middle-aged men suing Porsche for making them get a speeding ticket?â⬠With this example he gives an alternative view of looking at lawsuit towards fast food restaurants that are just doing their jobs and making us food. This is not to say that the fast food restaurants donââ¬â¢t have a part in people being fat. With fast food places spending millions of dollars in advertising, who is not to say that some can be misleading? With so many ads and billboards persuading us to eat even though weââ¬â¢re not hungry. Even if itââ¬â¢s not the misleading ads, the misleading nutrition facts on food labels play a big part. They offer an item that says an X number of calories but in small fine print or on a separate item states dressing or cheese or etc. adds an additional X number of calories that many people are not aware of. So at the end your X number has been doubled without you even noticing. So when we intake those calories into our body, we are actually creating a serious problem, a problem that hurts the nation, as a whole and us. If there is a paid celebrity promoting something people are ten times likely to try that promotion out. Arecent trend came out that was created by Carlââ¬â¢s Jr. where Paris Hilton was casting an a advertisement on television looking seductive and inducing a viewer while indulging her big juicy burger that is assembled with calories anywhere from 400-600. With that one advertisement being televised there are so many wrong signals that are being sent out to the viewers. For one, Paris Hilton is half naked on a car enjoying a cheeseburger which automatically grabs everyoneââ¬â¢s attention, mainly men. Second, anyone who thinks of Paris Hilton as a role model will do anything she does or enjoys. This means that people are more likely to remember that type of burger and order it. Also, in the advertisement Paris Hilton has a slim body figure, so most girls will assume that burger will not show up in their love handles when, in reality, it does and will. The government should really take action on this advertisement and any other advertisements that are in the same category. When we get fat we make our self more available to diseases and this affects everyone in one way or another. Zinczenko stated an interesting yet frightening fact about the data of young kids and diabetes. In 1994 only 2% of all the children had diabetes but now itââ¬â¢s almost as 30%. This also means that healthcare cost went from $2.6 billion to over $100 billion. With this kind of change it affects every tax payer because it is their tax money that pays for their health care. When the government pays for their healthcare, is there any incentive to stop eating unhealthy meals and to change life styles? ââ¬Å"When the government steps in and pays for your bills and pills, then what would want you to make you better, stop eating when full, or not eat that extra cheese burgerâ⬠stated by Radley Balko in ââ¬Å"What You Eat Is Your businessâ⬠. When the government steps in and has a central healthcare then our weight isnââ¬â¢t our problems itââ¬â¢s the governments. When it is the governmentââ¬â¢s problem, it is everyoneââ¬â¢s problem because when they eat that extra cheeseburger then thatââ¬â¢s more money the tax payers would have to pay. To change this, according to Balko, we need to free insurance companies to reward healthy lifestyles then penalize the poor ones and also make the weight and health problems one the people and not the government. Radley also wrote another idea; if the government has the responsibility and not the people then why should the people change from the unhealthy yet comfortable choices of diets to the healthy but uncomfortable choices of diets? The people have nothing to lose but government does thatââ¬â¢s why we need to turn the tables so people care and they do have to lose then they will learn to change. But with change where do we start? The change has started in many of our school and also the government has stepped in according to Balko. ââ¬Å"The government is trying to help with anti-obesity initiatives, including prohibiting junk food in school vending machines, federal funding for new bike trails and sidewalks and demanding labels on foodstuff, restrictive food marketing to children and prodding the food industry into more ââ¬Å"responsibleâ⬠behavior.â⬠When the government steps in, it costs us, as tax payers, money. Just because the government steps in doesnââ¬â¢t mean they are always right. With that being said, a perfect example would be our college campus. Our campus has a variety of fast food places. With students being on the go, and trying to get to their next class on time, they need something to go, fast and quick. Students right away rush to the closest place that sells food. Students do not really have much healthy choices on campus and cannot do much to eat healthy. Some people might argue, and say shut down these unhealthy fast-food places. If that were possible, then where would the students who live in a dorm eat or work? How will they make their living cost? So this would affect their income. In my opinion, building a healthier cafeteria that serves fruits, salads, brown rice, etc. at a reasonable price would be the best interest for people. With prices being an issue, this leads me to my next hypocritical issue. Lets face the reality; a regular cheeseburger cost no more than two dollars. A salad would cost four to five dollars. A banana would cost us a dollar. Out of the three food choices I listed, which item will most likely fill up a personââ¬â¢s appetite? Of course, a cheeseburger would and it is affordable, a dollar cannot go wrong. It is no wonder why many people go for the cheeseburger. All the healthy items are pricy and would not fill up oneââ¬â¢s appetite. So why have it cost more? Why canââ¬â¢t the society do everyone a favor and make the salad a dollar, and a cheeseburger three dollars. If anything the meat would cost more than the lettuce! Then the government is wondering why our society is becoming obese. Money plays a huge role in people becoming obese. With the governments BMI (body mass index) scale it labels you as normal, overweight, or obese as stated in ââ¬Å"Being Fat Is Okâ⬠by Paul Campos. He argues that the BMI scale is greatly unfair and need to take in more factors to classify people in weight ground other than just weight. He, himself, is labeled as overweight even though he works out every day and maintains a healthy lifestyle. He states that the government has 3 lies that they scam us with. The first lie states, ââ¬Å"We know that fat people are less healthy than thin people because they are fat.â⬠But there is no basis for this claim also stated by Campos. Lie number two says, ââ¬Å"We know that fat people would be as healthy as thin people if they lost weight.â⬠But the reality is that they donââ¬â¢t know that 20 pound less will affect them or if it will acquire the same health risks as a person that start 20 pounds lighter. Lie number three arguable, ââ¬Å"Fat people can choose to be thinner.â⬠With the diet frailer rates at 90% to 98%, how can we lose the weight? There are many lies and misleading facts about being ââ¬Å"fatâ⬠. When being a woman in todayââ¬â¢s society, ââ¬Å"fatâ⬠can be even worse. Feminist Susie Orbach, states, in ââ¬Å"Fat is a Feminist Issueâ⬠, that 50% of all the girls in the US are fat or overweight. Her tone of voice changes and she says that a woman will look to how her role is played in society. With our role models and superstars being at a size 0 or 2 or even a 4, a girl that looks up to them also tries being like them even if there a size 22 they think they are ââ¬Å"fatâ⬠because of the stereotype of being slim and having a perfect body. Susie also describes that, ââ¬Å"Women are candidates for men, they become pray to the huge fashion and diet industries that first set up the ideal images and then exhort women to meet them.â⬠By this, Susie is trying to say that in todayââ¬â¢s society, women look how others want them to look. It does not matter if itââ¬â¢s the fashion world, beauty industry, or even just men. Women are shaped to look a certain way. As the fashion, or menââ¬â¢s taste in women, changes, so do womenââ¬â¢s bodies. What Susie Orbach stated in the last sentence of her book, ââ¬Å"In this way, fat expresses a rebellion against the powerlessness of the woman, against the pressure to look and act in a certain way and against being evaluated on her ability to create an image of her ownâ⬠has us wondering if this is actually true? With so many views on ââ¬Å"fatâ⬠who do we believe? Is it possible to even pick a side? Can it be one companyââ¬â¢s or personââ¬â¢s fault? Or does it have a mixture? According to most people, being ââ¬Å"fatâ⬠appears to be one of the biggest issues in health. Overall this is a very controversial topic because society does play a huge role in this, but at the end of the day who is responsible for their weight, the consumer. Not everyone is obese and not everyone should have to eat what obese people should be eating. The society does play a role by not taking action for their lies, false advertisements, and promoters. The government cannot do anything about this; they cannot take a burger out of someoneââ¬â¢s hand. Though, they are letting FDA sell diet pills, they are advertising and having TV shows on obese people and their devastated lifestyles. But is this even helping the obese people? If it were helping, the number of obese people would have decreased. The consumers need to take advantage of the gym, diet pills, and just being active. If the consumer cannot do these simple tasks then they have no self-control and do not care about their lives. Also society is playing a role to help obesity out. Society and media only want and show slim body types and have better clothes for them. Even in media they have a word called ââ¬Å"grenadeâ⬠which means an ugly fat girl. This is not only rude, but also very degrading to women. Even though our society has a big impact on obesity, there is nothing they can do to stop it because restaurants and food product owners have to make their money. Obesity is one of the things that looks like is never going to come to an end due to all of our media and lack of motivation to work out. References Balko, Radley. Cato Institute . Cato Institute . He besides exposes what each of these characters represent in the novel. Tom is the adversary of the novel. Pleasure motivates him, and he lives his life with luxury and easiness. Tom Buchanan is the primary adversary in The Great Gatsby. He inherits his luck from his household, and lives his whole life without working, populating in elegance and indulgence, doing him a spoilt adult male. All of Tom? s actions are envious and his feelings are all for himself. He boasts in forepart of his invitees about his ownerships, he says? I? ve got a nice topographic point here? , with eyes blinking about restlessly ( Fitzgerald 7 ) , and even glees about his kept woman, doing no effort to maintain his matter secret. ? I want you to run into my miss? Tom insists ( 24 ) . He shows no concern for the effects of his actions, because all his life, he hasn? T had to worry about any effects. Tom shows small fondness throughout the novel and shows marks of apprehensiveness merely when he sees marks of losing both Myrtle and Daisy. After doing Gatsby? s decease, he shows no marks of sorrow or repent for doing his decease, merely self-pity over the loss of his kept woman, Myrtle. Tom is a really violent individual. From the beginning, when Nick pays them a visit, Tom is really forceful with him, and this strength comes of course. Before I could answer that he was my neighbour [ Gatsby ] dinner was announced ; lodging his tense arm peremptorily under mine, Tom Buchanan compelled me from the room as though he were traveling a checker to another square. At the terminal of the narrative, Tom and Daisy leave, so they can go forth their jobs behind them. Tom does this because he is a casual individual, who will non be bothered by the jobs he causes. Tom symb olizes the authoritative, chesty rich category of society. Gatsby is the supporter of the narrative. He starts immature as a hapless adult male and makes his luck himself. Although it is non clear how he made his luck, it is apparent that he is involved with organized offense. ? This is Slage talking # 8230 ; ? ? Yes? ? The name was unfamiliar. ? Hell of a note, International Relations and Security Network? t it? Get my wire? ? ? There haven? t been any wires. ? ? Young Parke? s in problem, ? he said quickly. ? You neer can state in these bumpkinly towns? ? The motive for doing this money is to win his past lover, Daisy Buchanan. After he left her to travel to the war, she was romanced by Tom, and finally married him, because Gatsby didn? t have the wealth to maintain her at the clip. His later-acquired wealth was made because of a phantasy he created with his return from the war. That fantasy being to do adequate money and wealths to win back the love of his life, Daisy. His phantasy was symbolized in the narrative with the green visible radiation at the Buchanan place across the bay. Gatsby? s full battles in this narrative are focussed on conveying him and Daisy back together, in a manner, conveying back clip. ? Can? t repetition the yesteryear? ? Gatsby cried unbelievingly. ? Why of class you can! ? ( 111 ) . Gatsby is non a violent individual, despite his connexion with organized offense, and Nick overlooks the moral significance of Gatsby? s bootlegging, and his association with Meyer Wolfsheim, who seemingly rigged the World Seri es in 1919. When Gatsby is about to run into Daisy for the first clip in old ages, he is more nervous and incapacitated than a immature male child. Because of his motive, and his committedness, he is fond, and by and large a more baronial individual compared to Tom. Gatsby signifies in the novel, the aspiring, the wishful, and the hopeful people of today? s society. He besides conveys an image of an obsessional fiend. The lone existent fondness Nick shows in the novel is towards Gatsby. ? You? re worth the whole darn clump put together? said Nick ( 154 ) . He admires his optimism, and his ability to woolgather and populate as if the dream were to come true. This is the ground he overlooks Gatsby? s condemnable associations. These two characters, Tom Buchanan and Jay Gatsby, are really similar in that they are both every bit affluent, nevertheless they both have differences that are really important, and the storyteller, Nick, displays these differences really good. Tom lives his life with luxury and easiness, without any loads. Gatsby on the other manus, is the good cat of the novel. All Gatsby truly wants is the love of his life, Daisy. Gatsby will travel through any agencies necessary to acquire this love he so long desires. This is what Nick appreciates about Gatsby # 8211 ; his optimism and finding. Fitzgerald, F. Analysis of Elizabeth Barrett Browning Essays
Analysis of Elizabeth Barrett Browning Essays Analysis of Elizabeth Barrett Browning Paper Analysis of Elizabeth Barrett Browning Paper Elizabeth Barrett Browning wrote the poem ââ¬ËSonnets from the Portuguese XLIIIââ¬â¢ shortly after she eloped with Robert Browning and married him. ââ¬â¢ Sonnets from the Portugueseââ¬â¢ was a sequence of poems that readers thought must have been translations from Portuguese but were actually all Browningsââ¬â¢ own work and were given this name, as her husbandââ¬â¢s pet name for her was my little Portuguese. With this in mind, it is clear that the poems were written from her to her husband. The poem is a petrarchan sonnet which uses iambic pentameter. The poem has a very feminine tone to it which can be identified quickly through the type of diction used ââ¬ËBeing and ideal Graceââ¬â¢, ââ¬Ëevery dayââ¬â¢s Most quiet need,ââ¬â¢. The poem begins with the persona asking a rhetorical question of ââ¬ËHow do I love thee? ââ¬â¢ and then goes on to answer the question herself by listing the different ways in which she loves her husband. The first way describes love to the ââ¬Ëdepthââ¬â¢, ââ¬Ëbreadthââ¬â¢ and ââ¬Ëheightââ¬â¢ that the personaââ¬â¢s soul can reach. The use of tripling is using the soul as a spatial metaphor comparing the soul to a three dimensional physical object as all things in the universe are, meaning the love is real and spans the measurement of the whole depth and length of the universe. The use of tripling could also suggest some sort of reference to the holy trinity taking the love to not only a physical but also a spiritual level, as she refers to the soul which is the body and spirit infused. ââ¬Ëwhen feeling out of sight For the ends of being and ideal grace,ââ¬â¢ shows that the persona loves to the essence of her being to the end of existence. This refers to the natural order and explaining how her love reaches all the way to the top of the chain, to God. The ââ¬Ëideal Graceââ¬â¢ being Godââ¬â¢s gift of salvation and the eternal love and bliss felt in his presence. This is likening the love for her husband to the love she has for God. The use of enjambment in lines three and four adds additional emphasis to the measure of how far the personaââ¬â¢s love extends. The use of rhyme with ââ¬Ëfeelingââ¬â¢ and ââ¬ËBeingââ¬â¢ in these lines helps to tie the poem together more tightly. The second way describes how she loves ââ¬Ëto the level of every dayââ¬â¢s Most quiet need, by sun and candle-light. ââ¬â¢ The use of imagery through ââ¬Ësun and candle-lightââ¬â¢ is quite abstract as they are different references to light, something that takes place out of the physical world. This suggests a love that goes through time and is on the same level as her most basic human needs through day or night such as air. The third way ââ¬ËI love thee freely, as men strive for Right;ââ¬â¢ is describing how she loves of her own free will, not through force, threat or obligation and how this love is necessary to her happiness just as it is that men strive freely for right. The forth way ââ¬ËI love thee purely, as they turn from Praise. ââ¬â¢ describes how her love is not lust, it is purely love and not to receive any praise. The fifth way ââ¬Ëwith a passion put to use In my old griefs,ââ¬â¢ suggests that she loves with the same depth of feeling as the grief she has felt in her past. The use of the word passion could also be a biblical reference meaning that she loves with such intensity that it resembles the suffering of Christââ¬â¢s crucifixion. The anaphora of ââ¬ËI love theeââ¬â¢ repeated in lines seven, eight and nine emphasizes by the structure of them that the poem is a list of loving. The sixth way ââ¬Ëwith my childhoodââ¬â¢s faith. ââ¬â¢ Describes how she loves with trust and innocence and with the sort of blind and unquestionable faith that existed inside of her when she was a child. There is a subtle chiasmus of sounds f and s on line ten which forces the reader to enunciate and stress this line so it is likely to be very important for Browning. The seventh way ââ¬Ëwith a love I seemed to lose With my lost saints. ââ¬â¢ Is describing how she thought she had lost this feeling of pure strong love with her lost loved ones who are now in heaven but now she loves him in that same way. It makes the love more realistic. She has felt sadness, anger, loss and loneliness in the past and this has an effect on how she loves in the present. ââ¬Ëlost saintsââ¬â¢ seems to be counterbalanced with the alliteration of l, ââ¬Ëloveââ¬â¢, ââ¬Ëloseââ¬â¢ lostââ¬â¢ and the sibilance of ââ¬Ëseemedââ¬â¢, loseââ¬â¢ ââ¬Ësaintsââ¬â¢. The eighth way ââ¬Ëwith the breath, Smiles, tears, of all my lifeââ¬â¢ describes how she loves him with all of the happiness and sadness that sheââ¬â¢s ever felt and ever likely to and that she loves him with her very life and will until her last breath. The final way ââ¬Ëand, if God choose, I shall but love thee better after death. ââ¬â¢ Is saying that if she is permitted to heaven after death and God allows her, her love will continue eternally and even greater than at present as she will feel Godââ¬â¢s love and have that to feel for him as well as her own love. This could be seen as hyperbole by some readers. The wordââ¬â¢ loveââ¬â¢ is used ten times throughout the poem. The fact that the word ââ¬Ëloveââ¬â¢ is used and that there are no synonyms for love used, shows that the love is consistent and unchanging and that the only thing the persona is concerned with is pure love. There is also repetition of ââ¬ËI love theeââ¬â¢ which places emphasis on these words. There is lots of assonance used of the long ââ¬Ëeââ¬â¢ vowel sound in words such as ââ¬Ëreachââ¬â¢, ââ¬Ëfeelingââ¬â¢, ââ¬ËBeingââ¬â¢ and ââ¬Ëideal which seems to make the poem a bit livelier and brighter and reminds us of ââ¬Ëtheeââ¬â¢ beloved one. This along with the repetition of the ââ¬Ëthââ¬â¢ ââ¬Ëbreadthââ¬â¢, ââ¬Ëdepthââ¬â¢, ââ¬Ëtheeââ¬â¢ as well as words such as ââ¬Ëfreelyââ¬â¢ and ââ¬Ëpurelyââ¬â¢ help the poem to flow very easily and can be drawn out to make it last just like the personaââ¬â¢s love. The sibilance throughout the poem makes it seem very soft and soothing and accentuates the feminine qualities of the poem. The Octave in the poem is very positive and draws analogies between the love of the persona and religious and political ideals where as the sestet starts to mention negative experiences and appears to draw analogies between the intensity of Browningââ¬â¢s own feelings when writing the poem and the intensity of love that she felt earlier in her life with the loss of her mother and brothers and likely the recent loss of her father and brothers due to her new love with her husband Robert. On further reading of the poem the reader gets the impression that not only is this a list of the different ways in which she loves but also a vow to her husband. The last line ââ¬ËI shall but love thee better after deathââ¬â¢ gives the feeling that she is making a promise to her husband to love him forever. This is likely to have been because Browning had been ill for most of her life and had thought about death so wanted her husband to know that if she were to be gone, her love for him would carry on.

Do you have what it takes to become an effective manager An in-depth Essay
Do you have what it takes to become an effective manager An in-depth self-evaluation - Essay Example nteered to support our activities which involved bush clearing along public roads, clearing drainage systems in our local village as well as helping the aged in tilling their land and landscaping their home compounds for no fee. I also had the privilege of playing leading roles in high school whereby I was assigned the role of a student leader, which was a challenging task as it required restraint as well as rigidity to avoid conflicts with my fellow students and the administration. This is due to the fact that whereas the administration expected me to report and manage the studentââ¬â¢s affairs, the students on the other hand expected favoritism, which I could not accept. Due to this exposure to leadership, I developed a strong leadership style that makes me confident of my managerial skills and principles, which I am always guided by whenever I am discharging my duties. Through my training period in Human Resource management as well as my Christian back ground, I have always believed that the employeesââ¬â¢ interests are as important as those of the firm I am working for. This is because without them, the firm would not be able to achieve its objective of maximizing profit. To achieve this, I believe that employee motivation should be a policy in the management procedures. Through my experience in Human resource management, I know that different individuals have different motivation factors (Mullins 2007 p 259). As such I am able to apply my skills by ensuring for example that the employees are provided with free transport, training opportunities to expand their knowledge at a subsidized cost, rewarding bonuses to the best performers etc. Whereas these priorities may be argued as to cost more expenses to the firm, the overall benefits that can be reaped are worth it. As a manager, one of my roles is to ensure that there are no conflicts between the employees and the administration (Mullins 2007 p 529). I believe that to achieve this, divide and rule policy should

Broad rhetorical analysis of Charles Murrays on Liberal Education as Essay
Broad rhetorical analysis of Charles Murrays on Liberal Education as suggested by President Obama - Essay Example It talks about students who are undertaking their education. If it were addressed to students, it would imply that the author was telling them not go for higher qualifications as it does not help. This would be a misguided advice to students. The thing is that students should always aim higher while in school or practice. In support of the argument, the author indicates that university degrees work well for children who come from wealthy families, but not for anyone else who wants to land in a stable job and is not interested in the aspect of education. He states, ââ¬Å"Children just want to know how to get a job that is satisfying and the one that pays well.â⬠He further adds that in order for students to meet their demands, higher education is normally required. However, this should not be essential or necessary anymore if certificate testing is to be used as the best way out. The author used some rhetorical appeals to pass his message across. For instance, when he indicates that college education culminating to a bachelorââ¬â¢s degree works well for the kids whose parents have a lot of money. In addition, he indicates that the system only works well for top students who come from backgrounds that are drawn to academics. The funny part comes when he indicates that most of the 18-year-olds or rather students are not from well-to-do families, are not drawn to academics and are not top students. This is based on the fact that there are thousands of people going through vocational training, but are not poor.

The Debate on Assault Weapons in the US
The Debate on Assault Weapons in the US The federal government of the United States of America should prohibit citizens from owning assault weapons. Discuss Assault Weapons Do you think weapons pose a threat to the individual and social level? But before this let us know what counts as an assault weapons. There is no technical definition of assault weapons, but it includes the fully automatic weapons, which fire continuously when the trigger is held down. Then there are semiautomatic weapons that reload automatically but fire only once each time the trigger. Semiautomatic pistols and rifles are extremely common in the United States in different sizes and shapes. In the last five years, there were many suggestions to limit the availability of assault weapons. Limiting the availability of weapons reduces the number of deaths, theft, and assaults in the community. Also, It can stop the assaults and foil terrorist operations. School disputes would be less lethal if weapons were elusive and more expensive. In addition, the government should deploy weapons awareness programs to spread awareness among people. Furthermore, the government should enforce laws on arms dealers to avoid many problems. Despite the governmentââ¬â¢s attempts to prevent weapons, the majority of murders and rubbery are caused by weapons. The federal government of the United States of America should prohibit citizens from owning assault weapons to limit murders, shooting accidents, and armed robbery. Guns have made a lot of problems and murder is one of them. Courtshave many cases for murders and crimes and many types of them. According to Gary kleck,ââ¬Å" Guns are heavily involved in violence in America. In 1993, about 71% of homicides and 63% of suicides involved guns. While it is not obvious whether there would be fewer deaths if there were fewer guns, or whether guns availability among those who would use guns for violent purposes, there is no doubt that a big share of Americaââ¬â¢s fatal violence involves the use of firearmsâ⬠(no page). This explains that limiting assault weapons decreases the rate of murders. The government can make a simple to the policy can protect the citizen. For example, firearms have become a popular way to commit suicide. Therefore, the Israeli government decided limiting access to weapons to reduce the rates of suicide within a simple suicide rate fell by 40%. Reducing the opportunities to obtain weapons reduces caused a significant chang e in the suicide rates. Therefore, a simple change in the policy may urge a big change in the community (Lubin, no page). Even if all guns have been avoided it does not mean that crimes will not happened, but prohibiting assault weapons will limit crimes and people will be safer. Shooting accident is one of the problems that caused by assault weapons. People usually keep their weapons in houses, but this is not safe. Kids can see the weapons and they will try to use them. Lack of understanding of weapons may occur big accidents like hurting or killing someone. Studies were conducted in the school shooting in a variety of disciplines. But so far there is not any competent authority to examine these events (Mushert, no page). Weapons can be safe if PEOPLE learn how to deal with them. However, people may not apply the laws if it did not come from the government. There is an example that happen every year, that is large number of children and teenager who get killed or injured in the best case scenario that would happen by wrong using gun in the United States. And family members, or strangers shoot some of them, either intentionally or unintentionally. It is true if we said that, some kids are using guns to attempt suicide, and these attempts prove successful mor e often than suicides by other things that is may use. The availability of guns allows many issues, and armed rubbery is one of the issues. As many issues have solutions, the government tries the best to solve these problems. Armed robbery is a great danger to the community. People do not feel that they are safe and they are afraid on their selves, kids and their money from thieves. Armed rubbery could happen easier if assault weapons are permissible. Without weapons thieves will not try to burgle on banks, stores and houses. Even if thieves try to burgle, it will be easy and safe to the government to catch them. If the government limits the availability of weapons, the rate of armed rubbery will decreases. In some countries such as the united state, assault weapon is legal. In addition, political term used in firearms laws in order to define and restrict specific firearms. In fact, there is a debate in Considerable about continues on how assault weapons should be defined. For instance, they are trying to limit kids of using weapon like gun in order to make the community feel comfortable about saving there children from this big risk which is legalize weapon. Federal law sets the minimum standards for firearm regulation in the United States; however individual states have their own laws, some of which provide further restrictions, others which have more lenient guidelines. The Gun Control Act of 1968 prohibited the sale of firearms to several categories of individuals, including persons under eighteen-years of age, those with criminal records, the mentally disabled, unlawful aliens, dishonorably discharged military personnel, and others. In 1993, the law was amended by the Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act, which mandated background checks for all unlicensed persons purchasing a firearm from a federally licensed dealer. However, critics maintain that a so-called ââ¬Å"gun show loophole,â⬠codified in the Firearm Owners Protection Act of 1986, effectively allows anyone, including convicted felons, to purchase firearms without a background check. As of December 2012, there were no federal laws banning semi-automatic assault weapons, military-style .50 caliber rifles, handguns, or large capacity ammunition magazines, which can increase the potential lethality of a given firearm. There was a federal prohibition on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines between 1994 and 2004, but Congress allowed these restrictions to expire. To sum up, criminal rates in some countries increase to nearly unexpected levels of crime and the entire increase was attributable to homicides committed by young people with guns. Guns are one of reason for this increase. If the government limit the availability of weapons and make more expensive, the rate of crimes will decrease. That why governments should limit the availability of assault weapons. Work Cited Arindrajit Dube, Oeinderil Dube and Omar Garcia-PONCE (2013). Philippine Culture Essay
Culture is a personââ¬â¢s social heritage or the customary ways in which groups organize their ways of behaving, thinking and feeling. It is transmitted from one generation to another through language. It presents people with ways of relating to others to their surroundings. Culture represents the designs or recipes for living, the interrelated network of norms and roles. It encompasses modes of thinking, acting, and feeling found in a society and includes everything an individual has acquired as a member of a society. It tells one what to do, what not to and how to do things (Poethig, 2005). From our culture, we learn to determine what behavior is appropriate and what is inappropriate, what is good and what wrong behavior is, what are allowed and what are prohibited, and even which smells are pleasant and which are not. One of the cultures that this paper investigates is the Philippine Culture. II. Discussion The Filipinos of the last quarter of the twentieth century are the sum total of the social strains and cultural elements that are Aeta, Indonesian, Malaysian, Hindu, Arabian, Chinese, Spanish, Americans; in short, the Filipinos are cosmopolitan in nature. They are both oriental and occidental. The Aeta, Indonesian, Malayan, Hindu, Arabian, and Chinese elements are the foundation of the Filipinoââ¬â¢s oriental natureââ¬âthe core of their moral and social conscience and cultural identity (Carino, 2008). From early trade and commerce and intermarriages between the Filipino ancestors and Chinese and Hindu merchants, as well as the wave of settlements of other Asian neighbors into the country, the oriental side of the Filipino has evolved. Interpersonal and social relationships revolve around ââ¬Å"blood ties,â⬠marriage, and ritual kinship (Carroll, 2002). Spanish and American culture composes the Filipinosââ¬â¢ Occidentalism. Through centuries of colonial rule, the Spanish influence found its way into their religious, political, economic, and educational life, as well as into their language, dress, and diet. In addition, Filipinos are also inclined to status-oriented behavior, shame, debt of gratitude, self-esteem as the desire for smooth interpersonal relations (Carroll, 2002). All of these interweave with one another and add up to an accentuation of authoritarian in the Filipino. Filipinos are also shame-oriented, that is, their major concern is social approval, acceptance by a group, and belonging to a group. Their behavior is generally dependent on what others will think, say, or do. Their desires and ambitions depend on what pleases or displeases others. Being bashful still controls much of the Filipinoââ¬â¢s behavior (Poethig, 2005). Moreover, the Family Code of the Philippines defines marriage as a special contract of permanent union between a man and woman entered into in accordance with law for the establishment of conjugal and family life. No marriage is valid in Philippine society unless the following requirements are present: the legal capacity of the contracting parties who must be a male and a female, and consent freely given in the presence of the solemnizing officer (Carino, 2008). The minimum age for marriage is 18 years but parental consent is necessary for those below 21 years. On one hand, the basic social units of Philippine society are the nuclear family, which includes the father, mother, and children, and the bilaterally extended kinship group, which embraces all relatives of the father and mother. Other important relationships are those of the siblings and the cousins and of the grandparents and grandchildren. The Christian Filipino family has often been described as a large family group, usually including three generations in the same home, which is, ââ¬Å"extendedâ⬠in terms of membership. Thus, the Filipino family is frequently said to be patriarchal in authority. Furthermore, the national language is Filipino, a formal version of Tagalog, an indigenous language. English is widely used in commerce and education. Most of the people are able to speak English. Only a few are able to speak Spanish (Poethig, 2005). Of the numerous indigenous languagesââ¬âbased mainly on Malayan-Polynesian languagesââ¬âthere are nine major ones. Of these, the most widely spoken are Cebuano, Tagalog, Ilocano, and Hiligaynon. III. Conclusion As a conclusion, in terms of residence, the Filipino family may be said to be bilocal and neolocal. The residence of the more influential and affluent family is likely to be the place of residence of the newly married couple. Where the girlââ¬â¢s parents are wealthier than the boyââ¬â¢s parents, the couple is likely to choose the residence of the girl. As a rule, Filipinos practice endogamy. One is likely to marry within oneââ¬â¢s locality grouping, social class, religion, or nationality grouping. The rationale is that the adjustive process is easier when one marries within oneââ¬â¢s group than when one marries outside it since one is already aware of its folkways and mores. Football and sociology Essay
American football as we know it originated from rugby played in Britain in the mid-19th century. The person who Americans consider the ââ¬Å"Father of American Footballâ⬠is Walter Camp. Professional football can be traced back to 1982, when there was a $500 contract for the Allegheny Athletic Association and the Pittsburgh Athletic Club to play a game against each other. Originally football was primarily a sport of the Midwestern industrial towns in the United State. In 1902, the American Professional Football Association was formed and two years later the National Football League. The competition was fierce between the two leagues, which led the two leagues to merge. Football eventually became national. When the two leagues merged is when the Super Bowl was formed. This is the most viewed event in the United States on a yearly basis. Football has grown for many years now and now has 32 teams. According to the Scarborough Research data, the NFL fans mirror the general United States population in many areas including age, race and income. There are a few discrepancies which include that men account for 49% of the general population, however the account for 58% of the NFL fans versus women who account for 51% of the general population but only account for $35-50K, in which they account for 19% of the fan base for the NFL. The report also states that there are more NFL fans that are married than non-married. The age group with the highest attendance whether on television or at the actual games is 35-44 years old. The Scarborough Report has a tremendous amount of statistics regarding NFL fans. The list goes from what they like to eat or drink to how many kids live in the household. I was very amazed by the information that was researched. In the society today, football affects almost every household. The impact of football has grown over the last few decades. The number of channels on the television in which sports can be watched has had a massive effect on the society. There are now channels just for specific sports and these channels only show that particular sport on that channel, all day. Football is a very physical sport. Youth like to see the physical part of the sport and they use the sports players as their role models. They all want to have muscles like the football players and be tough like the football players and of course they want to play football as well. The impact of football has both negative and positive factors. I found an article on the wives of the coaches of football. It was very interesting. In the article it states that in 1989, a group of women who were married to football coaches met at the American Football Coaches Association convention in Nashville, Tennessee (Tucker, 2001) and decided to form a support group. Evidently, they were feeling a little let out of the loop. For many men, football allows for violence and male bonding (Nelson, 1994), however, for women, football often means competing for menââ¬â¢s attention, or worrying about boyfriends, husbands or sons on the field. Within this article it also talks about how the spheres changed because men were known to leave the home and go outside to work and women stayed inside and were domesticated. Football is for men and it classifies them as performers and heroes, however women are classified as watchers and admirers. This article overall is showing the differences in men and women in regards to football. There were a lot of different opinions by different people who had heard about the organization of the American Football Coachesââ¬â¢ Wives Association. How this group puts together recipe books and visits the sick children in the hospital was a great asset to the group but they still donââ¬â¢t get the recognition that the football players get. This was a very tougher paper for me to write due to the fact that even though I like football, I have never looked at it in any other way than occasional entertainment. I am not a die-hard fan who watches the sport every chance that I get.Scarborough Research Examines NFL Fan Demos, QSR (2009, September).
